Antivirus Protection

With the large amount of malware out there, nobody should run a computer without good antimalware protection. Viruses and spyware can take up memory and cause the computer to run slowly. Look for reviews of different programs online and once your program is installed, make sure you update it and run it regularly. Just having the program on your system isn’t enough if you don’t take care of it.

Defragment

As the computer ages, files get spread throughout the system instead of being in one place where they can be easily found. Looking for pieces of these files can slow the computer down. By defragmenting the computer, you put the files together which can significantly speed up the system.

  1. Choose Start and then go to My Computer.
  2. Find the drive you want to defragment and right click on it.
  3. Click on Properties and open Tools.
  4. Choose Defragment Now. The process may take up to an hour, so be sure there is enough time and your computer won’t lose power or have to shut down in the middle of the process – that can wreak havoc on the system.

Disk Cleanup

Windows has a tool called Disk Cleanup that will allow you to easily remove files you no longer use.

  1. Go to Start and then All Programs.
  2. Choose Accessories and then System Tools.
  3. Choose Disk Cleanup. You may have to indicate which drive you want to clean.
  4. Scroll through to see the files list. Put a check mark by the files you want to delete. Click Ok.

Error Checker

This tool is also a part of the Windows operating system and will scan the drive for bad sectors and fix any that it finds.

  1. Go to Start and then My Computer.
  2. Right click on the drive that you want to search and choose Properties.
  3. Click on Tools and then Check Now.
  4. In the dialog box, select “Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.”
  5. Choose to fix any bad sectors the program finds.

Ready Boost

If you are using Windows Vista, there is a new tool called Ready Boost that will allow you to use a USB drive or memory stick to improve performance without having to add physical RAM on the inside of the machine.

You can access Ready Boost when you first plug in your USB memory device. Vista will scan the device to see if it will work with Ready Boost and ask you if you want to use it to improve performance. You will be using part of the memory stick to speed up performance and the rest to store files.
