How to Improve Windows 7 SpeedWindows 7 is the latest version of Windows released by Microsoft. Like its predecessors, Windows 7 can become sluggish the more you use it. Straight out of the box, your Windows 7 computer probably ran relatively fast, but as you add programs and hardware and adjust its settings to better match your preferences, it likely has slowed down. A registry cleaner designed for Windows 7 can certainly help speed Windows 7, but there are a few tricks that you can do on your own to give your computer a power boost.
Defragging Windows 7 Hard Drives While Windows 7 is brand new, many of its performance issues are the same old, same old including disk fragmentation. Regular disk defragmenting using the built-in Disk Defragmenter will combat this problem and improve Windows 7’s speed. Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter and allow the tool to run. Windows 7 Appearance Like Windows Vista, Windows 7 uses the “Aero” interface. While the Aero is visually appealing, it is also a resource eater. Turn off the Aero interface and get an immediate performance boost. This is done by choosing Personalize after right-clicking a blank area of the desktop. Choose “Windows Color and Appearance” and open the Classic Appearance Properties box. Find the Colors Schemes section and choose a Windows “Classic” or “Standard” color scheme from the list. The desktop wallpaper image that you have displayed may be contributing to slow performance. Many of the built-in images feature large file sizes which require extra work on behalf of your operating system to display. Either remove the wallpaper image completely or choose an image with a much smaller file size. Remove Startup Programs How many programs are loading on your computer each time Windows 7 boots up? Many application installers automatically set up the application to auto-load with Windows. This is convenient but it comes with a price: wasted system resources. Why dedicate RAM and CPU power to a program that you aren’t even using? Why do this for multiple programs that you are not using? Free up resources by removing these unnecessary programs from startup. This can be done via Windows Defender or the System Configuration utility. The easiest way is to launch Windows Defender, click Options, click Software Explorer and then disable programs that you do not need running. The System Configuration utility is launched by clicking the Windows key followed by the ‘r’ key. Type msconfig into the box and click OK. Click the Startup tab and remove any programs that are non-essential from the list by removing the checkmark in the program’s box. Give Windows 7 a Boost with ReadyBoost If you have a ReadyBoost-compatible USB flash drive, consider using it to give Windows 7 a temporary memory boost. When inserted, your computer will display an AutoPlay menu that will ask you if you want to enable ReadyBoost, and if so, how much space to dedicate to it. With ReadyBoost enabled, you can quickly add temporary memory space to your computer and speed Windows 7. Defragging the disk, adjusting Windows 7’s appearance, managing startup programs, and using ReadyBoost are easy do-it-yourself performance tips that can speed up Windows 7.
