How to Make Software Programs Download Faster

Many download accelerators are on the market promising to improve download speeds. While these utilities may improve your download speeds, try to speed up downloads on your own first by doing a few “do it yourself” steps.

The first option involves calling your ISP and having a little chat about your current service. You might first run a free “speed test” offered online to measure your current download speed and then compare that to what your ISP is supposed to provide you. If your results are within the given range, ask about upgrading to a better performance plan (hint: ask for a free upgrade). If your results are less than optimal, ask you ISP for technical help in tweaking your modem or router to achieve faster downloads. It could be a simple matter of changing a setting.

From there, double check your USB Root Hub settings (if you are connected to the Internet via a USB hub) to make sure that the Power Management setting is not set to conserve energy. When this happens, your device may be turned off due to inactivity – in the middle of a download. Go to Control Panel and click on Device Manager. Double Click Universal Serial Bus Controllers and then double click the USB Root Hub. Click the Power Management tab and disable the option that says, “Allow the computer to turn off the device to save power.” You will need to do this on all USB Root Hubs listed.

Another step when you want faster downloads is to dedicate more system resources to the download process. If you are planning on downloading a file from the Internet, take the time to close unnecessary programs and services beforehand. After all, if you have a bunch of programs randomly checking the Internet for updates or communicating in the background, these programs will use up resources that could have been devoted to the download.

If you have your computer set to download and install Microsoft updates automatically, adjust your settings so that the downloads take place when you are not using the computer. By doing this, you won’t have Microsoft downloading huge update files when you need to download other important files. In addition, adjust the upload and download settings of other programs to take place either at times when you don’t actively use the computer or when the computer is idle. For example, online backups can be configured to upload your backed up files at specific times of the day or when the computer is idle. The less interference you have from these applications, the better.

If you are using a wireless Internet connection, consider using a wired connection in anticipation of a download. A direct Ethernet connection into your cable or DSL modem will likely provide you with faster download speeds than your wireless connection.

Finally, make sure that your computer is 100 percent free of malware by updating your computer security software (from a reputable computer security software vendor only) and running a full system scan. Malware is notorious for using up bandwidth. If you notice excessively slow downloads and system performance, it’s possible that spyware is using your Internet connection to send massive amounts of spam to others, downloading additional spyware, or sending sensitive data from your computer to a third party.
