The registry is at the center of any computer that is running Windows. It has information about how your system works and appears. Errors in the registry can cause big problems with your computer ranging from slow shutdown and error messages to not being able to startup at all.

How to Repair the Windows Registry, Step by Step

You will often get error messages that will tell you what you can do to fix it when there is a problem with the registry. Because there are too many to list here, you should go to the Microsoft Support Center if you have a specific registry error or try one of the many registry cleaners that are available online. These error messages will often tell you which registry key is corrupted and if you are comfortable with your system, you can go into the registry and try to fix the key yourself.

One caveat about getting into the registry – changing one key incorrectly can severely damage your system, so you need to be very careful. Make sure all of your data is backed up and set a System Restore point so that you can roll back the system if there are any problems.

Backup the Registry

You should backup the registry before you start working, but know that if you back up the entire registry you may back up any errors that are present at the time.

  1. Go to Start and then Run.
  2. Type in: ntbackup.exe and click OK.

If you only want to copy individual registry keys:

  1. Go to Start and then Run. Type in regedit and click OK.
  2. Find and click on the key that has the information you want to edit.
  3. In File, click Export.
  4. Select the location where you want to save the Registration Entries in the Save box.
  5. Type in the file name and click Save.

Fix Common Registry Errors

If you have a specific error message, you can often get specific instructions for fixing that particular registry key. Once you have that information, you can get into the registry and do the adjustment. To get into the registry:

  1. Go to Start and then Run.
  2. Type in: regedit and click Enter.
  3. You will see a list of the registry keys. Navigate to the key you need and do the fix.

Increase Computer Speed

Clearing the page file can speed up your system:

  1. Go to Start and then choose Run.
  2. In the dialog box, type in: regedit.exe.
  3. Find the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>System>CurrentControlSet>ControlSession> ManagerMemory
  4. Double click on Clear Page File at Shutdown.
  5. Change the value of the paging file to 0.

You can speed up your applications by changing a registry key value:

  1. Go to Start and then Run. Type in: regedit.
  2. Find the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE> SYSTEM >CurrentControlSet>Control>Session Manager>Memory Management> PrefetchParameters
  3. Change the value of EnablePrefetcher from the default of 3 to 5.

Restart the computer.
